In the early sixties a group of players at the San Juan Country Club in Farmington, New Mexico started playing a game they called the "Swing" as a means of wagering on their golf skills.
The procedure for creating the swing was simple: one player gathered a golf ball from each player present who wanted to be included (everyone did) and then threw them high into the air. The two balls resting closest to one another belonged to the two "Swing Players".
The Swing Players would then bet their net "best ball score by hole", using their full handicap, against the "best ball score" of all possible combinations of teams created by pairing the other players in the group with one another.
Golfers have utilized various games for wagering on their golfing skills. One widely utilized game is called "Skins" determined by the outright winner of a hole with the lowest score posted.
